World’s Top Problem is Overpopulation, Not Climate
Today we bring you a piece from MarketWatch columnist Paul B. Farrell. And while many will find this to be way over-the-top, I can confidently say this is one of my favorite rants of all time. In this article he calls out the science deniers and, even more so, anyone aware of the facts who is still caught up in the cycle of over-procreation, production, consumption, and greed. No one is spared from the culpability. “We’re to blame. We are the engine driving a new species extermination. The human race is in a suicidal run to self-destruction. We can’t blame it on the great American conspiracy of climate-science deniers, Big Oil, the Koch Bros, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Congress. It’s us.”
He believes that the awareness of the overpopulation problem is much more proliferating than we are currently assuming. But humans seem to have no interest in doing anything about it if it means lifestyles need to be changed. “Everybody on Earth is in denial about our biggest problem ... population growth. Too many new babies, a net of 75 million a year. And we’re all closet deniers — leaders, investors, billionaires, the 99%, everybody. Yes, even Bill McKibben’s 350.org global team. The U.N.’s 2,000 scientists know overpopulation is Earth’s only real problem…Even scientists are science deniers too. They know population growth is the killer issue, but are avoiding it too. Thousands of scientists have brilliant technical solutions to reducing the impact of global warming. But avoid the root cause. They keep solving the dependent variables in their climate-change science equation. But population growth is the cause of the Earth’s problem, not the result.”
Farrell is not polite or diplomatic -- or articulate for that matter -- in his approach to this. But I find this sort of candor and denunciation so refreshing. You may not agree with everything he is saying here, in fact there are many references out there to claim the man is insane. One professional article advises him to be medicated. Other comments suggest he be fired. But this only strengthens his resolve, as it does mine. I don’t think anyone reads this article feeling all that vindicated in his/her actions. But it certainly will make you question your daily decisions that might be in direct opposition to what you know to be true about the fate of the planet and our role in that. “We just keep buying gas guzzlers, keep investing retirement money in Exxon Mobil, keep making more and more babies, forever in denial of the widening gap between perpetual economic growth and more babies living on a planet of rapidly diminishing resources.”
“Stop, shift, focus on the real problem. Stop focusing on the dependent variables. Your scientific method makes this clear ... we are making too many babies. Population’s out of control. And that’s the world’s No. 1 problem. But we’re all in denial. So nobody’s dealing with the world’s biggest problem.”
I appreciate that he also doesn’t pretend to be optimistic about the issue. I mean, I have to in order to keep working, not to mention waking up. But it sure is nice to get a healthy dose of cold hard pointed truth once in a while. “Worst-case scenario: There is no solution. Overpopulation is going to drive us off a cliff. Even worse, seems nobody really cares. Nobody’s working on a real solution. No one has the courage. Not U.N. leaders, scientists or billionaires. No one. It’s taboo. All part of a conspiracy of silence. But denial is killing us…The dinosaurs didn’t even know what hit them in the last great species extinction. We know what’s ahead. We can make the big, tough decisions ... if only we wake up in time.”
This article felt like a rant I would hear from someone at a party (after a couple drinks). Of course it’s generally more influential to publish well researched and clearly communicated articles on such a dire subject. But something isn’t working. Somehow the severity of the situation isn’t quite reaching people. So shoot, let’s give angry, slightly manic, rants a try.
