What is Pro-Growth Bias?

Pro-Growth Bias is reflected in the media by the stories and words chosen, which hint and often trumpet that economic, population, and consumption growth is good and essential. Well we finally ended our streak of optimism this week. Three out of four stories on the Wall of Shame, and two of them were real zingers about overpopulation...either discrediting it or completely missing it. Your votes proved that these were the most engaging stories of the week but our piece about the Spies travel agency ad campaign out of Denmark was too wild to take a backseat to anything.

As most of you saw (as well as the other 5.4 million youtube viewers), an agency in Denmark is encouraging Danish couples to take more vacations and have more babies while doing it. It's cute, it's clever, and it just might work. Thankfully with their steady, equitable economy and primo spot on the UN's World Happiness Report most Danes will be intelligent and empowered enough to see the bigger picture here. The bigger picture being that, despite having a relatively low fertility rate, things are good. Things are great really and they are in a position to act as a role model for the rest of the world. No matter how you look at it, more bodies will require more resources. That's more resources than our planet can provide. And this is what should be examined rather than encouraging people to procreate more simply for economic reasons. Initially we didn't see any media articles talking about this in response to the ad and that was disappointing. But, if you find any, please post them below. We'd love to give them a spot on the Wall of Fame.

it's hard for me to even talk about Denmark, after what they are doing in their zoos and what they have been doing as a rite of passage for some of their male youth -- slaughtering innocent dolphin and whales and slathering themselves in the blood. How brave is that! About as brave as killing off lions, giraffes and any other healthy and sometimes very young animals that get in the way of their breeding program! Who can ever forget Marius laying on the floor and young school children watching him be chopped up and fed to the lions and tigers???
